The Herald and News staff took home eight awards from the annual Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association’s Better Newspaper Contest for 2014.

The paper competes among dailies in the state with 10,000 to 25,000 circulation. The convention where the awards were handed out was in Gleneden Beach recently. The Virginia newspaper association judged the contest.

Regional Editor Lee Juillerat won first place for best lifestyle coverage for his four-part outdoors series on hiking the John Muir Trail in Northern California.

The H&N staff also took first place for its website design at heraldandnews.com

Other awards were:

■ Best feature story, second place, Lacey Jarrell for Aquatic Transplant

■ Best multimedia element, second place, Lacey Jarrell, Tribal Restoration

■ Best page one design, second place, Nicole Crapps

■ Best special section, second place, Steve Matthies and sports staff for “Danny Miles win number 1,000”

■ Best sports photo, second place, Steven Silton, for championship track

■ Best spot news coverage, second place, Tristan Hiegler for “To Catch a Suspect.”
